On 4 December, Andrew Hodgson, CEO at Beck & Pollitzer and Gareth Johnson, MP for Dartford, attended the official Trafalgar Square Christmas tree lighting ceremony to witness the Mayors of London and Oslo illuminate ‘the world’s most famous Christmas tree’. The 20-meter spruce, which is affectionately known as ‘the Queen of the forest’, is an annual gift – since 1947 – from the people of Oslo to Britain for the Allies’ role in liberating their nation. The great tree was safely installed this week by Beck & Pollitzer’s specialist rigging team in Trafalgar Square.
‘For more than 10 years, we’ve been selected to transport the ‘Queen of the Forest’ across the UK then safely erect her in Trafalgar Square in time for the official lighting ceremony. We’re very proud to be invited by the Lord Mayor to join such a distinguished group as this at this year’s ceremony,’ says Andrew Hodgson, CEO at Beck & Pollitzer, who is joined today by Gareth Johnson, the MP for Dartford, and 34 Mayors from London and Oslo.
Asked by the BBC why Beck & Pollitzer is picked year-on-year to deliver and install the great spruce, Andrew explains: ‘It’s because our business started up 150 years ago in London that we have the specialist engineering skills to handle the more unusual, tricky jobs like this. Our clients know we can be trusted to safely erect a 20-meter high, 4-tonne spruce even in one of the world’s busiest tourist attractions. Though the majority of what we do for our clients now takes us all over the world to China, Russia and throughout Europe putting together industrial projects, we’re always delighted to be approached by the City to support Britain’s historic relationship with Norway at such a special time of the year.’
Commenting on last night’s ceremony, Gareth Johnson MP, said, ‘It’s great that Dartford has a role to play in this annual tradition. The Christmas tree gift from Norway is something that many people have huge affection for and we can be proud in Dartford that one of our local businesses plays a significant role in ensuring it makes it safely to Trafalgar Square.’
Signalling the start of the festive season for the nation’s capital, the lighting ceremony was conducted by the Mayor of Westminster (Councillor Audrey Lewis), Norwegian Ambassador (Ms. Mona Juul) and Governing Mayor of Oslo (Stian Berger Røsland). Decorated in traditional Norwegian style with hundreds of white lights, the tree provides a focal point for the Christmas Carol programme which kicked-off this year with singing by the St. Martin-in-the-Fields choir accompanied by the Salvation Army band.
