A talk with someone in the know…
Work with us
A day in life initiative
Name: Andrew Costin
Position: Group Financial Controller
Time in the company: 15 months
How does a typical day start?
… It depends. If I get in early, the first thing I do, start of the day, is take the stuff out of the dishwasher. No, I do! I take all the stuff out of the dishwasher to make it easier for everyone else. Then I come in—I’ll check social media before I get into work, see if anything on there that’s work related that needs a little like, I’ll do that—and then I’ll get into work, I’ll start looking at emails, clear down everything I need to clear down. Then the day becomes random from there, so depending what crops up will depend what I do.
And with which departments and divisions do you liaise with?
I work with pretty much all of the divisions across the world. At the moment, all of them, because we’re working on the budgets. So, month end, it’ll be all the divisions, budget-wise will be all the divisions and then, if any issues arise, it’ll be specific country discussions. Like at the moment we’ve got an issue in Belarus that we’re discussing with the Poles.
How big is your team?
2, but it’s about to expand.
What is the most challenging aspect of your role?
It’s probably working with different people across different jurisdictions and understanding the cultural differences between working with different countries.
What is the most enjoyable part of your role?
The people side. I enjoy working with people and the thing I enjoy most is helping people. If I look at it from my career perspective, the people who’ve taken a punt on me as I was going up through the ranks, and trained and mentored me… what I want to be able to do is do the same for other people. Which I try… whether they listen is another matter!
What would you advise to someone about to take on a similar role?
Probably that no day is the same and be prepared to be flexible, to any issues that may come up in a very short time frame.
When you’re not at work, how do you like to spend time? (Hobbies, interests).
Football. It used to be marathon running but obviously I haven’t done that for a while. Playing with my little one, ‘cause he’s beautiful. He is.
In one sentence, summarise the most positive aspect of your role:
I suppose the positive of my role is seeing the company grow, and being part of that growth along the way and seeing people grow with the company.
