Lightning bolt hits the streets of Wales

Lightning hit the pavements of Cardiff this week thanks to Beck & Pollitzer. A 10-meter illuminated steel and glass lightning bolt sculpture, has been installed this week as part of a carefully planned and conducted installation. The Beck & Pollitzer teams from Bath and Bilston cooperated seamlessly in ensuring a perfect project execution.

The sculpture named ‘Alight’ was erected quick as a flash with skill and precision, sparking much interest from passers-by. Weighing in the region of 6 tonnes, the artwork was commissioned by insurance group Admiral and is located outside the

firm’s prestigious new 11-storey high offices, between the Motorpoint Arena and Cineworld cinema.

Steve Goodliff, the Senior engineer at Beck & Pollitzer, who led the installation of the sculpture said, ‘It’s a great-looking piece that brought a smile to our faces and to all the onlookers who stopped to take in the sight of a colourful 6-tonne, solid steel lightning bolt being raised on its end to stand on point. This sort of installation project can be a challenge for many firms, but these specialist jobs are business-as-usual for us. Our guys have lifted everything, from Francis Chichester’s Gipsy Moth and the Trafalgar Square Christmas tree through to live bull elephants and a 68-foot giant wooden hippopotamus.’
